Die Arbeitsgruppe Endogene Geodynamik untersucht die Bildungs- und Entwicklungsprozesse der Lithosphärenplatten, d.h. der Erdkruste und des darunter liegenden Lithosphärenmantels unter Verwendung geochemischer und petrologischer Methoden. Die etwa 100 km dicken Lithosphärenplatten bilden sich durch magmatische Prozesse an divergenten und konvergenten Plattenrändern, den sogenannten Mittelozeanischen Rücken und Subduktionszonen. Diese Plattenränder sind die geodynamisch aktivsten Regionen der Erde und beeinflussen die Umwelt und den Menschen durch Vulkanausbrüche und Erdbeben.
Die globalen Stoffkreisläufe der Erde und die Bildung, der Aufstieg und die chemische Entwicklung von Schmelzen in der Erde sind Forschungsthemen der Arbeitsgruppe. Ein wichtiger Aspekt unserer Forschung umfasst auch die Konsequenzen der magmatischen Aktivität der Erde für den Menschen, z.B. von Vulkanausbrüchen für Umwelt und Klima oder die Bildung von magmatischen Erzlagerstätten.
