The Chair of Applied Geology at GeoZentrum Nordbayern, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany is offering a

3-year PhD position

in geochemistry & stable isotope research.

We seek a highly motivated candidate for an interdisciplinary project on salt deposits and their use as underground storage of gases and fluids. The project aims to investigate principles of innovative technologies to help understand cavern stability. Partners involved are experts from industry and from Helmholtz GeoForschungszentrum (GFZ Potsdam) with aspects of geophysics, gas geochemistry and hydrogeological modelling.

Project objectives include identification of fluid and gas sources in salt deposits and work will focus on stable isotope analyses of H2O and CO2, extractions from highly saline solutions and participation in high p/T laboratory experiments.

 Candiate Profile:

  • Master degree (or equivalent) in Natural SciencesStrong interest in geochemistry
  • Willingness to carry out fieldwork below ground in active salt mines
  • Ability to independently develop and perform experimental approaches
  • Enthusiasm for scientific writing and fun when working in a team

Scientific results are expected to be published in international journals and the candidate should also present results on conferences. Knowledge of German and an EU valid drivers licence (B) would be an advantage.

The position is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Starting date is 01.07.2017 and the salary is TVL E13 up to 75 % together with health and social security benefits for 3 years.
