Scientific interests

My research targets evolutionary processes at the broadest temporal and spatial scales. Focusing on patterns in deep time I try to extract general principles of the interplay between earth system change and biodiversity dynamics in marine ecosystems. Most of my research is empirical and data heavy. I develop and utilize large paleobiological and biological databases to allow for a comprehensive analysis of biodiversity patterns. Much of my energy has been dedicated to develop the openly accessible Opens external link in new windowPaleobiology Database (PaleoDB). Reefal ecosystems have been the focus of my research for the last 15 years. Major questions concerned (1) the identification of physico-chemical drivers controlling the waxing and waning of reef systems; (2) the role of biological interactions in determining reef stability; and (3) the evolutionary role of reefs in generating biodiversity in the oceans. Other scientific interests are (1) the interplay of reef crises and mass extinctions (especially the end-Triassic and end-Cretaceous mass extinctions), (2) the role of climate in biogeography, and (4) the role of temperature in evolutionary processes.
